I brought this to replace an old surround system and was surprised at the sound quality straight away.
The idea of having a speaker to fit just in front of an lcd tv is a good one and really enhances the sound as most tv sound is poor.
The receiver has 3 hdmi inputs and 1 digital optical connection(must be used if you want tv sound out of the speakers).
The surround sound from blu ray and dvd films is excellent and even old cds sound fantastic despite the system not being 5.1 surround.
The great advantage of this set up is not having the clutter of speakers and cables everywhere.
The only minor drawback is that the tuner is fm/am and not dab.
The receiver also has a media port connection to enable use of ipods and mobile phones using the Yamaha docking system (not included)Yamaha YDS-11SL Universal iPod Dock
Overall if you need to save space and enhance your listening experience to both your blu rays and tv then this cinema package is well worth investing in.

As in the title really. It works, it goes very loud, but there is no surround effect that I can detect. Not to worry, it is very discreet, teams up with our Panasonic Viera stuff, and with our Logitech Harmony One remote is just easy to use. Recommended.

In summary I am happy with this system. The sound is good, without being outstanding. You are led to believe that your ears will be tricked into thinking you are listening to a full 7:1 surround system, but I'm afraid my ears are not having it. The sound at lower volumes is definitely only in front of me. At higher volumes yes it does fill the room, but then it would, its loud. One huge disappointment is that I'm still on rare occasions not able to catch what people are saying on some blu-ray films, which the centre unit of the sound bar is supposed to alleviate.
That said when it is loud, subwoofer pumped up, blu-ray on, it blows you away. Absolutely great for such a compact thing. And I wasn't really expecting so much more from it when i bought it. I bought for utility: the unobtrusiveness of it, whilst getting the best sound per square inch and for that I'm happy with my purchase.
No idea why it comes with an analogue tuner given today's dab & digital set-top options, which is too weak anyway to pick up much of a signal in my flat, even with the supplied ariel. Its a bit cynical that in this day an age the amp does not come with a USB slot for playing music, but then Yamaha promotes their must-buy i-pod dock. These are asides really since all I was looking for was a home cinema and this delivers that.
Another star is lost due to the fact I had to return the first incarnation due to two of its 3 HDMI connections being faulty. Hats off to the reseller (Hughes Direct) though, they turned around the collection and re-delivery of the replacement within a week. Should you expect more from a £400 2-piece kit?

Now had the Yamaha YHTS400 installed for over 3 weeks. Looks great with the main unit in the bottom of the TV cabinet and the Front/Left/Right speaker bar sitting very neatly and unobtrusively under the screen (46" Samsung LED). Why don't more manufacturers use this approach? No big boxes needed, no cables to trail around the room. This system will fit well with most flat screen TV installations.
Sound quality is very good, even in a large room. For the first time my wife has stopped complaining about not being able to hear the voices over background music and atmospheric noise in films and other programmes. The centre speaker needed a little tweak on the very simple menu system to get just the right balance but that only took moments.
If you want good clear sound from your TV without huge expense or complicated installation give the Yamaha a try.
Having looked carefully and tried many products I have seen nothing to beat this for looks and performance at the price.
