5 out of 5 stars Superb Blu-ray player, very good audio system   March 12, 2010
D. Harrison (Northampton, England)
Having always sworn I wouldn't I finally decided to make the switch to Blu-ray when I had to replace my two year old Sony Bravia with a newer model after it was "stolen" following a recent domestic crisis. The TV was the Sony KDL40W5500U and I wanted the same brand throughout for the whole of the new system. I read a lot about the Bravia Sync function and really liked the idea of not having to use three separate remote controls all the time for the individual components. I have to say that this works pretty well and for most requirements for normal viewing you can indeed use just the one remote to perform all the normal functions. If you want to play around with the settings of the individual components then you still do have to use the individual remotes to access all of the functions and settings available, but certainly once you've got everything to your liking then one is all you really need.
Anyway, to the Blu-ray player first. The player included in this package is the BDPS350 and is to my mind a fine bit of kit indeed. My first view of a Blu-ray disk on my new system (the BBC Yellowstone wildlife documentary) really took my breath away - I really did feel as though my living room had turned into an icy wilderness with a huge bison breathing steam in the corner of the room! I have been equally impressed with most of the other Blu-ray discs I have invested in and the picture is far better than I could have imagined. Highlights thus far are BBC's Planet Earth and Yellowstone, Blade Runner (US import 5 disc edition), The Matrix Trilogy, Batman Begins and the Dark Knight, The Prisoner TV series, Gone With the Wind and The Red Shoes. I know a lot depends on the quality of the source and how it has been transferred to Blu-ray, but for me these are all stunning examples that will truly show off your system to the full - and good/great films into the bargain. I have also been really impressed with the quality of upscaling of DVDs, especially the later ones of top quality films. My extended edition box set of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, for example, looks even more stunning than ever.
If you really want a top quality surround sound system then the BDV-FS350 2.1 offered in this package is probably not for you. The supposed "virtual" surround sound offered is certainly well short of the real deal, but if you've only got a small room, or don't want speaker cables trailing everywhere, or even if you just don't want the full ear-shattering cinema experience in your living room then this fits the bill - at least it does for us. The two speakers are small and sturdy and put out more than enough volume for our large and quite echoing room and we're not walking into them, kicking them over or tripping over wires. The sub-woofer is a big box and delivers more than enough bass to shake the house and scare the dog witless if the volume is turned up too much. One niggle with it is that the need to keep it 0.5 metres away from the wall limits its positioning slightly.
Overall impressions then are that this is a fantastic package if you don't want or need the full surround sound experience. If you do then I can still heartily recommend the Blu-ray player but you will need to look for an alternative sound system to go with it.
One other observation - I did order this from Amazon initially but the order was cancelled because of stock unavailability. I managed to get it from elsewhere, and slightly cheaper, and it still arrived before the new TV. I probably shouldn't advertise where I got it from on Amazon, but I can certainly recommend them for speed of delivery and customer service, and if anyone is interested in who they were they can always post a comment on this review and I will reply to them.

5 out of 5 stars Just about excellent   December 20, 2009

Simple to set up and very easy to use. This system delivers great sound for a 2.1 and is plenty loud enough to put a smile on your face. I can literally feel the vibrations upstairs when its on downstairs, the woofer adds real punch and makes the whole thing tie together nicely. If you dont want the hassle of wires everywhere, this is probably one of the best 2.1 systems around.

My wife and I were fed up using subtitles to follow TV dialogue. This compact system solved the problem with minimal disturbance. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great price for Sony quality   August 1, 2009

Had been after a Blu-ray cinema system for some time, but they were too expensive - this Sony 2.1 set up was on special offer and has proven to be a really good buy. The sound quality is excellent and the set up was very easy - I have a Sony TV and it synched after minimal fuss. It obviously does not have the rear speakers for true surround, but that can wait for a few years until the kids have grown up and wireless technology has improved. On the visual side, the difference between old DVD and Blu-ray HD is amazing - crystal clear pictures which gets the value out of your HD ready TV. Don't think you can ever go wrong with Sony products.
